always wondering

While on vacation last week being the good entrpreneur that I am , hmm,hmm...
I wondered why there are no self service gas stations in DR???
then I thought, if every gas station has 8 to 10 pumps they have an idiot at every pump thats 10 salaries per shift, translates into a lot of cash ...... why not put a self-service station and lower the gas price by 5 to 7 pesos against the competition... are we dominicans sooooo vain that we wont pump our own gas ?????

hmmmmm

BACK FROM VACATION

Well I just got back from vacation, which this January I decided to go back home to D.R. As usual a good choice. I got held back because of the f@#king snow, but I flew out on Monday night on jetblue, By the way a little tip on flying jetblue, always ask for the exit door seats usually rows 1, 11, 12, they are without a doubt the best seats in the plane, they have the most legroom so you wont be cramped in a little space, anyhow I got to DR and it seems everytime I go down there my dads car has a new problem, it happens to be a land rover Discovery, I think he should discover the way to a car dealership and get a new ride, but that a whole other post.. The first leg of my week I spent in Coral Hamaca at Boca Chica, not bad I've stayed in better but out of 10 I give it an 7 cuz of the nightlife, not to hot, but what resort has good nightlife? In the day I went to the acropolis with my wife who was not impressed by the mall but then again she's used to US malls so I see her point, I thought the acropolis was nice and they have a TGIfriday inside, which is hilarious to go to in DR, people I noticed walking in there were all decked out like going to a high class restaurant, hello its Fridays??? Whatever I guess the prices justify the attire, but my wife who has never lived in DR and never really hung out like a "local" happened to like the trip, I took her to all my old stomping grounds in Santiago and we hung around with my old friends, oooohhh

ANOTHER DAY ANOTHER HEADACHE

Here we are again, back at work and my partner is on vacation....

Pero como le dije a un amigo "lo mio es la lata", vender latas es lo mio, there arent many challenges in my business, except staying afloat, in an industry were the cost of doing business has doubled in the last five years, but the customer base just gets smaller.

Oh yeah thats right thats the challenge. to stay open........

In the Beginning

Funny how life takes to so many different places and yet you might be standing in the same spot.

My dad Came to the US in early 1971, with about 300 dollars in his pockets and the "American Dream" in his mind. He and a group of men in this early time of what I like to call the "Dominican Rennaissance" in NYC worked long and difficult hours in this city. Working in Bodegas, Factories and whatever other odd jobs were found, some men toook the easy route and profitted from the dealings of the street, others like my dad decided to bust their humps and make an honest living, this was no easy task, sometimes working in excess of 16 hours in a single day and not finding the time for family ( while still having to keep one together). Many un-educated, my dad for example only has a second grade education, and believe it or not this is the norm in a small circle of prosperous business men in NYC, I have no memory of my dad until i was about 5 yrs old, he was never around always in a bodega working his tail off, first for someone else, then later for himself but still hard work. I guess I was blessed with not having to go through the hardships of the prior generation, but thats what he worked for or so he told me about 3 million times, but I dont forget how hard it was for him and his peers to reach the goals they set and realize the dreams they came on the plane with, breaking down language barriers, racial oppression and the like. Maybe for some life wasnt so difficult and the hours were not so long, but many of those havent achieved what my dad and others have in the short time given. Nowadays 85 percent of independant supermarkets in NYC are dominican owned and operated.

That is something to be proud of!!!!

when we lived in DR people used to look down on what my dad did for a living, as you know DR is or was a country where social standing is everything, and my friends parents were all doctors and lawyers who luckily never had to leave the country chasing "the dream", pero mi papa era un "campesino embullao" no porque en mi casa escuchabamos bachata a todo dar, ni porque andaba en un a supra con un musicon, pero solo porque era del campo y sin la educacion academica tenia logros economicos que sobrepasaban muchos doctores y abogados de la "Sociedad" santiaguera.

Though many wouldnt believe it, from the way me and my dad treat each other,

Mi papa es mi heroe, and it is because of him , que hoy soy el hombre que soy.

Punto y Aparte
